Haken’s Guide to the Perfect Pedicure
with tips from Professional Pedicurist Simmy Bredal-Bell
Step
1:
Fill a clean pedicure basin with water that is a comfortable temperature for
your client. For basins and bowls, add 2-3 Tablespoons of Spa
Foot Soak Crystals. For whirlpool spas, add 3-4 tablespoons. The
Crystals will not bubble or damage pipes. Soak for approximately 10 minutes.
Simmy’s Tip # 1:
As your client is relaxing while their feet are soaking, take the
opportunity to make a beautiful presentation with your products and
implements. In a ceremonial fashion, lay out your pedicure products and
allow your clients to see you pull clean disinfected implements from a clean
container. Nothing impresses a client more than a nail professional’s
meticulous attention to cleanliness.
Step
2:
Remove one foot from water and lightly towel dry.
Using a clean foot file or electric file, smooth away any dry or cracked
skin. Repeat this step on the other foot.
Simmy’s
Tip # 2:
Because the feet have been soaking, this is the best time to remove callus
and dead skin without the need for additional products.
Step
3:
Remove Polish. Next cut, file and shape toenails. Apply your favorite
cuticle remover. Next, gently push back the cuticle and remove any excess
non-living tissue with clean, disinfected cuticle nippers. Using a hand
buffer or an extra fine diamond bit and electric file, lightly buff the top
of the nail plate to smooth and refresh the surface. Now, massage your
favorite scent of Haken Cuticle Oil into the cuticle and nail plate.
Return foot to the water and repeat this step on the other foot.
Simmy’s
tip # 3:
There are many different pedicure bits that can be used with electric files
for pedicures. I highly recommend using these, but not before you take an
electric file safety course to ensure the safe use of these tools.
Step
4:
Remove foot from the water and towel dry. Apply a small amount (about the
size of a quarter) of the Honey Exfoliating Foot Scrub to the bottom
of the foot. Lightly massage the bottom of the foot to slough away even
more dead skin. Rinse the foot and lightly towel dry.
Simmy’s
tip # 4:
It is natural to want to scrub the entire foot with a scrub, but it is
important to remember that the skin on the top of the foot is very
sensitive. You must use good judgment to determine whether or not a scrub
should be used on this area.
Step
5:
Continuing with the same foot, apply a generous amount of Spa Foot Yogurt
Mask to the entire foot. Options: wrap the foot in a towel or a hot
moist towel for about 5 minutes – this allows for deeper penetration of the
Mask. Repeat steps 4 and 5 on the other foot.
Simmy’s
Tip #5:
Remember to maintain sanitary conditions by using a fresh spatula for each
application of product.
Step
6:
Using a dime size portion of Spa Foot Moisturizing Cleanser, gently
massage away any mask that has not penetrated the skin. Thoroughly rinse
the foot and lightly towel dry. Wrap the foot in dry towel. Repeat on the
other foot.
Simmy’s
Tip # 6:
For a nice touch, have two hot moist wash cloths (one for each foot)
available to remove any leftover product.
Step
7:
Start with one or two pumps of Spa Foot Massage Butter. Thoroughly
massage the product into the skin. Apply more massage butter as needed.
Simmy’s
Tip #7:
When massaging someone’s foot, remember that each person has a different
comfort level. It is important to adjust the pressure you use for each
individual’s comfort level. This includes the calf and Achilles tendon area
above the back of the heel.
Final
Step:
Cleanse the nail plate with a solvent that is not oil-based. Next, have
your client put on their pedicure shoes. Apply one coat of Haken Rehydrator
Base Coat to all ten nails. Follow with two coats of their choice of color
from Haken’s extensive line of Nail Lacquer. Finish with Haken Fast Dry Top
Coat.
Simmy’s
Final Tip:
Remember to wipe the bottom of your client’s foot before putting on their
pedicure sandals - this prevents them from slipping. As a finishing
touch, apply a drop of Haken Cuticle Oil onto each nail. This will nourish
the cuticle and protect the polish as it dries.
